Carstens Tönnieshof Vase, West Germany, 1960s

VNTG00273
$146
$
A compact, spherical vase featuring an expressive blue reactive glaze. Its surface is covered in complex, iridescent shades, shifting from light blue to grey-blue, giving the piece a dynamic quality that changes with the light.

Such glazes became a hallmark of West German ceramics in the mid-20th century. Thanks to its combination of a concise form and rich texture, this vase remains a striking decorative object even without flowers.

Its small size makes it suitable for single stems, or for styling a bookshelf, console, or coffee table.

About Carstens Tönnieshof
Carstens Tönnieshof was one of the most renowned West German ceramic manufacturers of the 20th century. The company was among the largest producers of artistic interior ceramics during the West German Pottery period and gained international recognition through its experiments with form and glazes.

In the 1950s–70s, Carstens products were exported across Europe and to North America. Today, items from this manufacturer are considered some of the most recognisable examples of mid-20th-century West German design and enjoy sustained interest among collectors and enthusiasts of mid-century aesthetics.

The preserved original manufacturer's sticker further confirms the item's provenance.

About Reactive Glaze
Reactive glaze is a ceramic coating technique where the final pattern forms directly during firing. Minerals and oxides within the glaze react at high temperatures, creating unique colour transitions, speckles, iridescence, and crystalline effects.

This is why two identical vases with reactive glaze are virtually impossible to find: each acquires its own distinct pattern and surface hue.

If the item's characteristics were specified in advance on the product card, they are not considered defects or flaws.

Most vintage items have been previously used. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to determine if an item has been used after purchase—even with expert examination. We ask that you consider this when placing an order: returns for vintage items are not provided.

Before purchasing, you will have the opportunity to carefully inspect the item—either at the pick-up point or upon delivery by courier. If something is not suitable, you can decline the purchase on the spot. In this case, the buyer pays for the return shipping.
If you have accepted the parcel, it means that the item has captured your heart and you have decided to keep it.
