Pair of Val Saint Lambert «Griffins» Candlesticks, Glass, 1930s

VNTG0004134
34000,00
$
A rare find: a pair of candlesticks from the legendary Belgian manufacturer Val Saint Lambert, designed by Charles Graffart and René Delvenne in 1935.
The base, shaped like fantastical griffins, is cast in matte satin glass, while the stem and upper cup are in clear, glossy glass. The contrast in textures lends the candlesticks a distinct sculptural expressiveness; the figures appear to cradle the candle flame like heraldic crests.

The form is substantial yet precise, featuring intricate optical architecture. These candlesticks are well-balanced, highly stable, and designed for classic candles. An excellent example of Art Deco decorative glass.

About Val Saint Lambert:
A Belgian art glass manufactory founded in 1826 within a former abbey near Liège. For nearly two centuries, it has remained a symbol of high European glassmaking, comparable in caliber to Baccarat or Lalique.
From the late 19th century, and especially in the 1920s-30s, Val Saint Lambert became a flagship of Art Deco in glass: the company actively experimented with form, light, and texture, creating objects at the intersection of applied art and sculpture.
The most significant figures of this period were Charles Graffart and René Delvenne — designers whose names are now featured in international catalogs of collectible glass. They are credited with the authorship of this 1935 model, part of a rare line featuring mythological creatures.

How to use:
  • At the center of a festive table setting, as a focal point.
  • On either side of a mantelpiece, for a touch of Belgian Art Deco.
  • Or simply as a pair, where the light, not the candles, is paramount.
