Egg-shaped box with craquelure glaze

VNTG0001100
10000,00
$
A piece that manages to be both touching and expressive.
With its creamy-yellow surface, rounded form, and subtle sheen, this vintage box evokes a stylized souvenir from the mid-20th century.
At first glance, it's just an egg. But its surface is covered with a network of micro-cracks: this is the craquelure technique, where the glaze forms a characteristic pattern after firing.

Form and Origin:
The egg form in decorative arts is no accident. It is one of the oldest symbols in material culture, associated with rebirth, preservation, and mystery.
In the 20th century, the "egg" form was actively used in European object design—from Easter objects to futuristic decorative forms. It appeared especially often as boxes, caskets, packaging, and display objects (objets de vitrine).

Technique: Craquelure glaze:
Craquelure is a deliberate decorative technique where the glaze, upon cooling, develops a network of fine cracks.
Important:
  • The cracks are not defects but an intentional texture.
  • The surface remains hygienic and safe.

This technique was particularly valued in France, Italy, Belgium, and Japan as a way to give an object visual depth and “deferred aging” — the effect of time embedded in the material.

How to use:
  • As a sweet dish for toffees, dragees, and sugared almonds
  • As a hiding place—for a ring, a letter, a talisman
  • As an Easter or New Year's decoration — an ironic and timeless symbol
  • As an art object — to place on a tablecloth or within a textile composition
  • As a reminder of something intimate. Even if you don't reveal what's inside, it will resonate.

We strive to describe the condition of each lot as accurately as possible, and our photographs are taken in good light and have not been retouched, so you can examine the item as thoroughly as possible.

Hronika: vintage collection features only those items that have retained their aesthetic appeal and can become a beautiful detail in any space. Nevertheless, please note that even perfect items may bear traces of time.

Most vintage items have been previously used. Therefore, it is virtually impossible to determine if an item has been used after purchase—even with expert examination. We ask that you consider this when placing an order: returns for vintage items are not provided.

Before purchasing, you will have the opportunity to carefully inspect the item—either at the pick-up point or upon delivery by courier. If something is not suitable, you can decline the purchase on the spot. In this case, the buyer pays for the return shipping.
