Serving Dish with Lemon, Maiolica, Italy

A classic example of Italian utilitarian ceramics from the second half of the 20th century: a large serving dish, crafted in the form of intertwining cabbage leaves, with an expressive centre—a sculptural lemon.
The piece is cast in a mould with deeply worked relief: the leaves gracefully spread from the centre, veins are meticulously delineated, and contours gently curve. At the heart is a completely hand-sculpted lemon, covered in a rich yellow glaze with subtle tonal transitions.
The work employs the traditional multi-coloured glazing technique characteristic of Italian ceramics of that era: a deep white background, a vibrant yellow accent detail, and a relief ornament.
On the al fresco tradition:
Such aperitif dishes were created during the 1960s–1970s, when the culture of al fresco—serving and dining outdoors in gardens, on terraces, and in patios—gained immense popularity in Italy and other Mediterranean countries.
This was a conscious return to the aesthetic of 18th–19th-century country villas, where the exquisite presentation of vegetables and fruits in picturesque ceramic forms complemented the atmosphere of a summer table.
In the 1960s, the mass production of such items was geared towards export—primarily to the USA, France, and Great Britain—where these pieces were perceived as the embodiment of “Italian dolce vita” and Mediterranean lightness.
How to use:
• For serving appetisers on a summer terrace—as a tribute to the al fresco culture
• For lemons, olives, and fruits on a large communal table
• As a decorative object: on a console or shelf
• As a convenient tray for keys and jewellery in the hallway
