Pictures of Our Real Life
A conversation with photographer Alexis Căpăţînă about everyday subjects in photography, the habit of printing photos, and what helps paint a picture of real life.
A conversation with photographer Alexis Căpăţînă about everyday subjects in photography, the habit of printing photos, and what helps paint a picture of real life.
The occasion is not so important:
I have two favourite point-and-shoot cameras, almost always loaded with film.
I photograph everything around me—our car journeys; how we bake pancakes for the whole family for breakfast; my grandmother by her childhood home; seasonal flowers that adorn the house and bring us joy; the rumpled morning bed; a hotel mirror selfie after a family dinner.
“I deeply appreciate photography for its ability to capture life’s moments. I especially love photographing my daily life, family, and simply existence with film cameras—for me, there is immense value and aesthetic pleasure in this.”

Preserving fleeting moments of life in memory:
Every six months, I’ve made it a habit to print my photographs—I feel a greater sense of value from the work when I can touch and see it in the physical world. Moreover, printing photos is a highly creative process: I enjoy working with the archive and arranging photographs into compositions.

Photography helps me preserve fleeting moments of life in memory: loved ones, family, daily life. All of this paints a picture of our real life.

To understand people and to understand myself through people:
My higher education is in psychology. I always liked psychology because it involves contact and communication with people.
Photography is also a way of interacting with people, only more creatively. It’s a wonderful opportunity to understand people, to understand myself through people, to be in touch with the world.
