Sommerso Bowl-Ashtray in the style of Flavio Poli, Murano, 1960s

VNTG00290
$340.28
$
A small Murano glass bowl-ashtray, crafted using the sommerso ("submerged") technique—one of the most recognisable methods in 20th-century Italian glassmaking. Coloured layers of glass appear to be placed within each other, creating an effect of depth and rich colour. Green and ruby-red glass were used in its creation.

The form, palette, and character of this piece align with the aesthetic of Flavio Poli’s works for Seguso Vetri d’Arte, created in the 1950s–60s.

This bowl can serve as an ashtray, a holder for incense, jewellery, or small trinkets, or as a standalone decorative object.

About the sommerso technique
Sommerso (from Italian, “submerged”) is a multi-layered Murano glass technique where one colour appears to be encased within another.
The technique became widespread on the island of Murano in the 1930s–60s and became one of the visual hallmarks of Italian mid-century design.

Flavio Poli and Seguso:
Flavio Poli (1900–1984) is one of the key designers of Murano glass of the 20th century. In the 1930s, he began collaborating with Seguso Vetri d’Arte, one of the oldest glass manufactories on the island of Murano, with a history dating back to the 14th century.

Poli's sommerso technique made multi-layered coloured glass internationally recognisable and is today considered an important part of mid-20th century Italian design history.

PLEASE NOTE

Each item in our vintage collection carries its own history, which may leave traces of its past life.
We strive to describe the condition of each lot as accurately as possible, and our photographs are taken in good light and are unretouched, allowing you to examine the item in detail.

Hronika: vintage collection features only those pieces that have retained their aesthetic appeal and can become a beautiful accent in any space. Nevertheless, please note that even perfect items may show signs of age.

If specific characteristics of an item were noted in the product description, these are not considered defects or flaws.

Most vintage items have been previously used. Therefore, it is almost impossible to determine if an item has been used after purchase — even with expert examination. We ask you to consider this when placing an order: returns for vintage items are not provided.

Before purchasing, you will have the opportunity to carefully inspect the item — at the pickup point or upon courier delivery. If something is not suitable, you can refuse the purchase on the spot. In this case, the buyer pays for the return shipping.
If you accept the parcel, it means that the item has captured your heart, and you have decided to keep it.
